Anyone who's had the good fortune of seeing a
Pearl in the flesh knows that it's one extraordinarily good looking phone, particularly by BlackBerry standards. Unfortunately, where we come from, phones that don't ring are called "paperweights" -- which is exactly what the Pearl becomes when the trackball gets nudged. You know, like if it's in your pocket, or your purse, or pretty much anywhere besides a stationary counter top. As it turns out, when the phone rings, the handset immediately silences the ringer with even the slightest movement of the trackball, regardless of whether keylock is enabled. While we do appreciate the Pearl taking the initiative for us and ignoring phone calls so we don't have to, there is an occasional situation where we like to make the decision ourselves, and until RIM issues a fix users simply don't have that option. Strangely, two Engadget editors patiently attempted to explain the issue to a RIM representative this week at CTIA for several minutes without success; we think the first step to RIM issuing a fix would be for the company to understand the problem, so we could be in for a bit of a wait. Maybe the words we were using were too big?

Things like this are why you have something along the lines of a beta test. So easy to do too. I would gladly bug-report for nothing but a constant supply of new cool phones, and so would lots of people.

I turned down the sensitivity of the trackball(70-50) and the problem went away.

is it just me or is there no more historical/ next page on the mobile section?

RTFM people...
if you hold down the Mute key it puts the device in "Standby" mode - locks the keyboard and disables all keys except the Mute.
Also, rolling the Trackball doesn't wake up the device, only clicking it (or other buttons when not in Standby) does.
Grant @ Sep 18th 2006 12:04PM
badonkadonk, that isn't correct...just rolling the ball, with the keyboard locked, will stop it from ringing. I have the phone and it happens everytime.
ALSO, and more importantly I think, is that the "Lock" doesn't stop the phone from being shut down by holding down the power (end) key. What good is a lock that stops the phone ringing and also lets it be accidentally shut down???

o2 europe has a new firmware that fixes the problem.
M Sheridan @ Dec 5th 2006 8:55PM
The US now has a new firmware as well, and this issue has now been addressed.
I had trouble installing the firmware, but it eventually worked.
However, there are still a few things I don't understand -- why isn't there an automatic keyboard lock (my pocket keeps dialing poeple); and why doesn't the alarm automatically snooze (you have to physically choose one of the two options or it just waits in limbo forever).
Nokia doesn't have these problems....

What is the firmware for this?
pete @ Feb 5th 2007 6:40AM

Aside form all of the syncing problems, (which have been partially rectified by
"missing sync fror blackberry"), the next problem I have encountered is
is audio based.
I can only communicate via the speakerphone or ear piece.
I know also that the caller at the other end of the line can hear me regardless
of whether the speaker phone is engaged or not.
Anyone?

Can anyone tell me why some emails will not delete from my Blackberr? Instead a blue faded folder is created that I cannot delete.
Garry @ Oct 3rd 2007 2:52AM
My blackbery Pearl is password protected and locked. Can't use black keys to enter the password which is 4 letters as it only recognises numbers.
Armando82 @ Dec 7th 2007 5:30PM
I just got a refurbished BlackBerry pearl, and it worked fine for all of 10 minutes, now the screen has went completely white, and blank, I have no clue what happened.
