Samsung considering legal action against X820 video

Update: The Korea Times is reporting that Motorola created the video but may have never intended for it to enter the public domain, citing YouTube's statement that the video's copyright belongs to Moto and has pulled the video as a result. It seems unlikely to us that Motorola would put together a video like this for internal use, particularly if the phone was pre-damaged as Samsung is suggesting -- but who knows? We love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy.

I have a x820. It's not that easy to break it the way it is shown. You have to have sat on it or some other trauma.

It's really depressing that this lady could get sued for this. It seems like common sense that a very thin phone like this would break easily. Does common sense even exist any more?

That's the thing - The phone can't be broken that easily. It is made of fiber-glass infused plastic along with magnesium alloy. You can't just snap it in half with your thumbs.

it's already been determined that this was a ploy by Motorola.
Going to YouTube, it even shows that Motorola have removed the video.

I agree, would be really hard to break this thing. but if you were to cool it down alot, it would make it quite a bit more brittle. just a thought

Looks like it pops at some joints. (Keyad/screen and top edge of battery cover) IF it was going to snap easily these would be likely points, the excellent engineers at Samsung would have beefed these areas up I'm sure.

I saw the video a while ago and it seemed pretty fake, considering that when she snaps the phone it's below the camera's view
I am picking up the T519/Trace (US X820) this week and hopefully it is really not that easy to break. I know th T509 I had felt pretty strong.

Unless there is something more to the video than Hugh posted above, there is absolutely no way that Samsung has any case in this matter. There is no direct explicit comment about the manufacturer of the phone, the design or the durability that could be construed as defamatory or otherwise. Yes a random person appears to break a phone that appears to be the x820. But there is nothing concrete other than that.

But may not have to with the actual production of the video, but more with the distribution of such material with a malicious intent. The Youtube evidence may be just one.

It wasn't a Samsung -- it was actually a Casio graphing calculator, and TRUST ME, those things break right in half. The down-swing is that I heard Casio is now trying to sue Samsung over publicity it did not receive by releasing this video

Although I haven't watched the video I can vouch that this phone breaks easily, i tripped with it whilst texting and the force of my thumb on the screen snapped it right along the bottom edge of it.
It's a little worrying that they are taking legal action over something like this, complete madness lol.

It happened to me too. I was using it while sitting at a table and somebody slapped me in the back of the head. Well, the jolt caused my thumbs to break the phone right in half. I slammed it down on the table and cut my hand. My "friend" was laughing his ass off.

Personally, I think cell phones should have to undergo the same strenuous side-impact and offset crash testing as passenger vehicles.

I have this phone too. It is sturdy enough. I'm sure Samsung the electronics giant won't release a product if it is not stress-tested. But please cut the phone some slack. It is only 6.9mm, so imagine if you fall down with it, obviously it will be more easily to break then some other phones. And I agree with The One Eyed Man. Maybe they should test it like how they test cars. Euro NCAP Phone test eh? Maybe Samsung should have integrated an airbag as well? So during an impact it expands and envelope the phone so it's protected?

I have this phone too and i was always very carefull with it. Now today i looked at the display and the screen was internally damaged. Ik was very dissapointed en in a agressive response i broke it just like the video, so it's true that it can be broken that easily

The phone is much more durable than what they show in the video guys, I had it, and sold it on eBay (because it didn't have the features I wanted, but it's a great phone)
it's very easy to make it look cheap, you get a fake model that they put up in a lot of stores...they don't cost much at all, and you break that one, and everybody thinks it's real! If you didnt notice, the phone is never ON, it was a FAKE PHONE guys...

For "The One Eyed Man" that wasn't a Casio calculator, if you watch the video, and blow it up a touch you can see it says "Samsung" on the back, and if I'm wrong and it's not "Samsung, it's way too long to be "Casio" Plus, you can see the green call button and red power/end call button. I don't know about you, but I've never seen a calculator that had those buttons before.

These phones are surprisingly durable. My Samsung Trace(T519) has been dropped (on concrete), sat on, and I've even accidentally put all my body weight on it leaning against tables and hand rails while it was sitting upright in my pocket. I've put it through its paces and it hasn't let me down yet.
