Rejoice, for Motorola Q's AKU2 update is at hand
After a bit of a false-start with AKU2 a couple weeks ago, Motorola is busting it out for reals this time, and we're thinking most Q owners should be plenty pleased. Naturally, MSFP, with its Exchange-based push email, global address book lookup and added security features should be a big hit with the suits, but we've got our eyes set on the new Dial-Up Networking (DUN) capabilities that'll allow us to get our tether on via USB or Bluetooth. There are other little enhancements, but we're sure you'd rather find 'em out for yourself by peeping the read link and downloading the update.[Via Mobility Site]

Great. But it still can't edit documents. What is up with that?

It's not supposed to edit documents. The Q is based on the Windows Mobile SmartPhone OS, not the Windows Mobile PocketPC OS. The Smart Phone OS was not even designed to include full qwerty keyboard on the phone.. Fortunatly the Q added the qwerty keyboard making it much easier to use, but the limitations of the OS still prevent Word/Excel/PowerPoint from being included.

If I can edit documents on my six-year-old Palm, I should be able to edit them on a 2006 Windows SmartPhone.
To say it can't edit documents because it isn't designed to edit documents is circular reasoning at best. Something with that much dedicated space for a keyboard should be able to edit documents.

This update would be nice if Verizon supported it! As of Aug. 31, Verizon was not offering nor supporting Dial-Up Networking on the Motorola Q to customers in Southern California. I can not understand why Motorola rolled out this update if its only U.S. carrier can not take advantage of one of the features. Motorola even has instructions for dial-up networking posted on its site (e.g. User Name: your mobile phone number @vzw3g.com, Password: vzw) that are written for VZW customers. However, don't bother following the instructions because according to Verizon tech support, Verizon has yet to provision this service.

the software update worked and so far i have had no problems that i am used to. seems to even be more responsive typing wise.
as for it not editing documents... it is kind of simple when you think about it.. regular phones cannot open or edit any kind of documents.. so a "Smartphone" will open documents and allow you to view them.. cause it is "Smart" now to edit documents on the go you are going to need a pda or a "pocketpc" logical really.
a pda and a pocketpc is to take the place of your pc.. you cannot put smartphone and palm/pocketpc on same level.
