Hampton Articulation adds SIP-compliant VoIP to Palm devices
What's better than a Skype client for Palm? A VoIP client compatible with any SIP provider, that's what. Hampton Software has released Articulation, which appears to be the first true provider-independent client for any Palm 5.x device with a mic and speaker (though rumor has it the 700p doesn't quite make the grade yet due to sound issues). The app may not have superstar looks, but the feature list is nothing to sneeze at with support for the GSM codec on low-bandwidth connections, echo cancellation for speakerphone use, touch tones for automated menus, and pretty much anything you could expect from a lightweight VoIP setup. If anyone gives this a whirl on their 650, be sure to hit us all up with the rundown in comments!

Works OK here. Stinkin' Skype doesn't support SIP so I had to set up a free account elsewhere just to test the bastard, but it ran, worked, and didn't soft-reset.

Unfortunately the app does not support any Clie PDA (yet). Other than that, it's really cool.

I can confirm it works on my treo 650.
I have only rung myself very quickly, so I cannot vouch for it's quality or reliability, but I can say it definately makes the connection.
I am using sipgate.co.uk for the service. My treo is then connected to the internet over bluetooth to my macbook pro using "Missing Sync for Palm OS", which then goes over wifi to the telephone lines to my home phone.
It's hardly elegant, but it's getting there.
My mobile has an 0845 number! (for non brits, it's all proffesional like), and I can change it whenever. could be handy...

I've downloaded and tried Articulation and it works sweet. Finally a VoIP client for the Palm!
What's wrong with the interface? I thought it was quite nice: simple and easy to use with a splash of colour, quite effective.

It worked very nice.

Well, it could be shinier, I suppose. I'd like to see Skype support.

What sound issues are you refering to w/the 700p? I have one and don't have any. Nor have I heard of anyone refering to sound issues on the 700p.

Didn't work on my Treo 650 over EDGE. I placed echo test calls but never got any audio echoed back to me. I tried all the suggestions listed in http://www.hamptonsoftware.co.uk/articulation/novoice.shtml except the NAT setting stuff. Since I have a Cingular MEdia Net plan, I can't accept inbound TCP or UDP, so maybe that's the problem.

700P issue

=========
"The problem with the Treo 700p...
The problem we have, based on information from one of our testers, is that the sound does not work. We do not have the problem on a Treo 650 or on the 700p simulator so we really need a real 700p device to test it against.
Unfortunately the Treo 700p is not generally available outside the US and therefore we do not have a model to test with. If there is sufficient demand we may be able to ship a device in for testing.
Feel free to try it, at one point we did get sound coming out of a headset.
If anyone does manage to get it going on a 700p please let me know!"
