The Boy Genius Report: VX9900 and Pantech 820 PPC due September

The Boy Genius dropped another one on us folks, check out this excerpt from a recent Verizon product timeline. Pantech will be launching a Windows Mobile 5 clamshell device -- running Pocket PC, suprisingly -- come September 4th, the PN-820 we saw in the FCC. That should also be the same day they launch the VX9900, also spotted in the FCC, "big brother to the VX9800 [aka the V] hybrid device with a thinner, sleeker look and feel." Amen to that, because our major complaints with the V had to do with its thickness and unappealing looks. Oh, and to top it off the LG VX8500 Chocolate phone will apparently have Verizon exclusivity for the life of the handset in the US -- though we're not necessarily sure if that means Chocolate phone exclusivity, or merely CDMA Chocolate. Stay tuned.

Despite that this leak says the Pantech 820 will offer the "Windows Mobile 5 PPC SmartPhone OS," I highly doubt this is Pocket PC Phone Edition. More than likely, that's a typo or written by someone who doesn't understand the differences between the Pocket PC and Smartphone flavors of Windows Mobile. Take a look at the photos of this phone (link below); there's no chance there's a stylus hidden in there somewhere, which is a requirement if it were a Pocket PC Phone Edition device.

But when will the 8500 be released? Because it has VZ's new GUI, which I will switch to (if it is any better, daresay I'll switch to a Windows phone... ugh) the minute it is available for purchase... Any clue?? VZW really needs to work on new phones, because other than a few of the ones they have, there is nada...

Would it be possible to see the rest of this document, like the release date of the LG vx8500. That would be great!

from what i've read, the version of the "chocolate" being released in the US doesn't even have the ipod type controls; they're replaced with regular buttons and a scrolling wheel. the vx9900 also can't be considered an upgrade unless the external screen is much better suited for camera use.

Missed this one big time. September? It's Dec 28th and nothing in sight.
I am sure it says something about Pantech and not BG. He got sandbagged here
