CNET has gone ahead and upgraded its
preview of the O2 Atom Exec to a full review, and it appears they've come away with a very positive impression of the refreshed non-
HTC -- yes, non-HTC -- Pocket PC. To refresh your melon, the Atom Exec is O2's Asia-only update of the
Atom, adding an extra 64MB of ROM (for a total of 192MB), boosting the device's PXA272 core from 416 to 520MHz, and toning down the glossy finish to a more matte one. CNET concludes that the Exec is a great device thanks largely to its roomy ROM and snappy performance, but that it probably isn't worthy of an upgrade for owners of the original Atom. European Atom owners: feelin' any jealousy here?

I like reading this blog, but not when all of the posts are about cellphones in Asian countries.
We can never use them, will never see them, and don't really care about them. Maybe you should report a little more on things in USA and Europe. Then you'd get actual comments because we'd care.

#1: Take a chill pill, Snappy McGrumpy. Many phones that are "Asia only" can and will work in the US and Europe, they're just not offered by the providers. Some of us import phones from Asia and are glad to hear about new devices. Nobody is forcing you to read the posts about them.

I'm commenting merely to state that jon is dead-on correct.
Engadget Mobile is a good site idea, but if it's a device that's Asia-only and likely will always stay Asia-only, why lower the signal to noise ratio of the site by reporting on it?
Before anyone gets snippy, let me state for the record that my last three toys have been the i-Mate kJAM, the i-Mate JAMin, and currently the Qtek 8310 (in addition to my BlackBerry). This is not a jealousy issue.

Folks, I direct your attention to the Engadget FAQ, question 7:

I'm not even upset for people to tell me to calm down. But at the time this news was posted, this and atleast 4 other on the main page were about Asian phones that we "shouldn't expect to see in the US!" and sporting features that "would seem like science fiction to us americans!"
I'm merely suggesting that instead of having a 1(american/europe) to 4(asia) ratio, they even it out a bit and have more news that has to do with us directly.
Notice how no one comments those stories about Docomo or whatever they're called. It's cool to be informed, but most of the recent articles before this one were about Asian phones. I think it would be nice to know about things going on in USA and Europe more. That's all.

I can totally see where jon is coming from, but at the same time i personally enjoy reading about all the new technology that's out whether it is accessible to me or not.
As far as the ratio goes, I dont think the people here at Engadget do it purposely...whatever is out, is what they will show us.
Sam @ Jul 5th 2006 10:19PM
Don't forget about us Australian O2 owners.
The idea of being able to get a matte finish annoys me slightly, but i was fully prepared for this kind of upgrade becoming available mere weeks after i bought mine.
Try a little harder @ Jul 5th 2006 10:39PM
Jon,
as far as I am aware, this is a site about mobile phones, it's not supposed to be about USA phones.
I think your comments indicate one of the problems in the USA today..'If it ain't american, we don't wanna know'
This attitude is partly responsible for why you don't have a comprehensive GSM system in the US & subsequently why you don't get a lot of the best phones. Open you mind & become part of the solution, not part of the problem.
Jason @ Jul 6th 2006 12:02AM
Don't forget people. the U.S of A is of course the only country on this planet!
Little wonder the rest of the world mock you fools so!
jon @ Jul 6th 2006 10:28AM
You guys are becomming immature and are exaggerating. I merely noticed that none of their news articles were getting comments...and the pattern was the ones that talked about Asian networks or cellular phones weren't. It's cool to know about Asian phones, but the majority of the front page was all about japan networks, docomo, asian smartphones and 3g phones that are available over there.
It's not like there isn't other news they can report on. There was just so much Asian news that it made me wonder why they weren't covering other things that have to do more directly with the vast majority of people who read their site.
mroach @ Jul 6th 2006 1:54PM
Why don't you point out other phone news then? I don't see much else going on...
It would be nice if someday we could have profiles on here so that we don't have to do email confirmation for every comment and so that we could filter out things we don't care about. I'd love to filter our Verizon, Sprint, Nextel, CDMA, EV-DO, iDEN, and other laughing-stock subjects that I can't take seriously.
O2 @ Jul 8th 2006 8:27AM
Jon, you'll be much happier reading phone news over at www.attws.com and www.tmobile.com. They have all the models that the US carries and USABLE. I think Razr is still the number 1 seller in the US the last time I checked, lol.
I just want to point out this is immature. Not the other posts. They are right on the nail.
