Sidekick 3 available to current T-Mobile customers
It pays to be a T-Mobile customer: while the rest of the country will have to endure nearly two more weeks of excruciating waiting to get their hands on a Sidekick 3 (well, except for us), current Mobbers have been snatching up the new device since it became available at one minute after midnight. Agreeing to a one-year contract extension will net you an SK3 for $350, while two more years of living the Mob life will knock off $50, and a "naked" unit will set you back an even $400.

Just a note, as it states in the article, us current Sidekick2 users get NO discount other than how long you are willing to dedicate your life to being stuck with a Sidekick. I have had a Sidekick2 that I bought in Feb '05 and it's already showing signs of usage and buttons no longer working, but since it's outside the 1 year warranty, i can't get it replaced or fixed without paying everything out of pocket.
I was really disappointed in T-Mobile that they are not giving current Sidekick2 users any kind of discount other than the "sign away your cell phone life" kind of deal. $300 (with 2 year contract) is just way to expensive since I just shelled out just a little less last year when I bought them to keep in touch with my hearing impared spouse. Its also stupid since t-mobile has been still selling the sidekick2 on their site even as of today, so what are these people who don't keep in touch with the tech industry going to do when they find out there is a new sidekick that they missed? Looks like i'm going to be switching to a blackberry soon since they have some for much cheaper than the new SK3 with minimal extra features than the SK2.
Am I bitter about it? yea, just a little. T-Mobile needs to give us loyal "testers" more of a reward. (due to the sheer number of bugs in the SK2).
Maybe a couple of those units they are giving out to some celebrities should find their way back to some of us regular users.

I ordered mine this morning. I NEVER had any problems with t-mobile or my 4 sidekicks. (I've had the SK1, a silver SK2 & 2 Juicy Couture SK2's) I think every person will have at least ONE bad experience with their wireless carrier. Fortunately for T-mobile, they weren't the bad ones lol. For the record my other phone is a blackberry & I like the push e-mail BUT the other features SUCK ROCKS lol so this new sidekick will really fit the bill for me.

do you want to sell or give ur sidekick to some one who's sidekick 3 broke

#1: Quit crying. Old Nokia users don't get discounts on new Nokias, it's the same concept.
If you bought it to stay in contact with your hearing impaired spouse, perhaps you should have chosen another phone. Or you could suck it up and stick with your SK2, and treat it a little better this time around. ;)
ZyphBear @ Jun 28th 2006 8:55PM
4: Really? and what else would you have expected me to buy to keep in touch? The Sidekick2 was the only thing available at the time that would allow TTY and SMS type features in an easier device. My Spouse can't even use the voice function of the Sidekick2. and yes, i have taken VERY good care of my SK2, but used it all the time (and I mean ALL the time) to keep in contact. I wasn't the only user amoung the hearing impaired audience that the OVER usage has worn away the buttons and caused the contacts under the keys to get worn away (which they only released recently as being a known issue, which is how the keys on the SK3 are different). When your alternative is only typing, it REALLY gets used. We bought the Sidekick2 upon the strong suggestion of the local "hard of hearing" non-profit group since trying to use a standard phone was really not working. Not for the "really cool device" concept. Unfortunatly, they can't help subsidize a replacement phone either since they don't have the kind of cash due to being a non-profit.
And Old Nokia users don't normally have to spend $300 on a new phone unless it has a little bit of everything in it either (like the communicator). Nor is it designed with hearing impaired users as one of it's audience.
Jonathan @ Jun 28th 2006 11:12PM
ZyphBear: Most old Nokia users spend upwards of $250 - if they're lucky - for the good new phones. Like the N Series, or the Nokia L'Amour Fashion Series. The 8801. The N-Gage apon first release. The high end flip phones such as the Nokia 6131. So, you're pretty much wrong.

I ordered my SK3 yesterday, a little upset that they wouldnt rebate me on my RAZR that i bought a year ago, but i can't blame them, they know as well as i do that the thing is a POS. Had no trouble shelling out for a 2 year contract with the phone for 300$ and the Sidekick plan (unlim. internet, email, txt msging, IM...) for only 20$/mo is not bad seeing how i was already paying 10$/mo for 1k txt pic vid msgs with the RAZR... i cant wait for my SK3 tho should be here sat or mon. :-D leet

In other news, the Sidekick 4 has been available for quite some time now at the same price.

I switched from my SK2 to that "Sidekick 4" you mention back in April, Tom. 4 rebooting, interface-cursing weeks later, I was happily back on my SK2 and now await my SK3. They are 2 completely different devices with different target audiences... very unfair and misleading to call the 8125 or MDA the Sidekick 4.
Nick @ Jun 29th 2006 4:23PM
My T-Mobile MDA Vario kicks the pants out of this new Sidekick ;)
steve @ Jun 29th 2006 4:23PM
I just ordered one and I'm loving it!!
All you sidekick haters are so freaking funny to everyone that HAS a sk2...
alex @ Jun 29th 2006 6:18PM
Does anyone know what the email storage capacity on the SK3 is? I've had the Sidekick I & II and the 6MB of storage is just not cutting it anymore. I think it's time to switch to the Motorola Q.
TomTheGeek @ Jun 29th 2006 6:45PM
How are they completely different devices? Really the only thing different is the software and the fact that Wizard (aka 8125 or MDA) has all of the features as a Sidekick plus more. That's the reason I called it the SD4, eventually the SK will have the same features that the Wizard has now.
I just can't see the appeal of such a closed system. Sidekicks only work w/T-Mobile. My 8125 works with any GSM provider.
You can write your own software for the SK but it only works on other SKs. There are tons of Windows Mobile devices in many form factors and as a result there is WAY more software available for that platform.
My 8125 is customized the way I want it, not the way Cingular wants it and I'm not just talking about wallpapers and ringtones. The latest ROM update for the 8125 doesn't have the A2DP profile, no problem, I can add it myself. Let's see you do that with your SK.
If the SK was signifigantly cheaper I would totally see what the SK's was all about, an entry level device. But it's the _same_price_. It's like buying a cheap basic calculator when you could have gotten one of those fancy TI scientific calculators. So what if you don't use 5% of the TI's features, you didn't lose anything by going for the advanced model.
I'm sure the SK will rapidly come down in price and it will make more sense. It just doesn't make any to me right now.
cracka @ Jun 29th 2006 8:02PM
UI is everything in a mobile device. SK has it, Windows Mobile doesn't. I think HTC built a terrific device - it's a shame it's saddled with WM5. That was my experience, anyhow. Glad you like your 8125... as for mine, it's for sale. Good riddence. :)
julio @ Jun 30th 2006 11:38PM
Just got my sidekick 3. Everything is cool except with the fact that you can't download AOL Mail. Hope they add that on to the applications download section soon. I NEED THAT!!
zorn @ Jul 1st 2006 4:09PM
I got mine on thursday evening, popped in my SIM card, everything transported over, with the exception of ringtones and games, which is a total bummer. I MISS TETRIS!!!
The trackball is awesome, it zooms through the UI easily. The only thing I really don't like is the lack of weight and the feel of plastic, sometimes I feel like I'm going to flip the screen off the sidekick by opening it.
The updated keyboard is a nice touch, overall I'm happy with my purchase and I didn't mind shelling out the $300 for it. I'd also like to add to the on going dispute about TMobile's service area sucking. During the summer months I travel across the country and I've never had a problem using TMobile's network anywhere, with the exception of Nowhere, Texas and parts of Canada, other than that I'm stoked on this thing.

Im interested in buying this sk3. but im just wondering how the reception is for roaming calls or nationwide calls or just calls in general?
liv @ Jan 12th 2007 2:43PM
Nothing beats the new Apple/Cingular device, T-Mobile and the SideKick companies are going to exhaust themselves brainstorming for the SK4. It's gotta be thinner, lighter with more power, a better internet browser, touch screen maybe? There has to be a more developed Mp3 program, clearer picture--It all has to be there, and it all has to sell for less than or the same as the Apple product. Good luck with that.
brian @ Jan 25th 2007 3:22AM
ive herd that the sk's only work with t-mobile, but i know some1 that has a sk2 and uses cellular one as a service, so im wondering if anyone knows if cellular one is an acception or not? Please get back to me soon because i want to order a sk3 soon if it is gonna work
thanks
