Treo Nitro and Treo Lennon coming to Cingular in October

The Treo Lennon is listed as having UMTS and Class 10 EDGE, a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, WiFi (built-in, one can only hope), and sports Windows Mobile 5.0 with MSFP. Not quite as many details about the Treo Nitro, but it is listed as having a 1.3 megapixel digital camera and appears to be running the Palm OS.

Hmm.. it looks cool, but I'm wondering if it's real. Didn't cingular go with HSDPA rather than UMTS? Why would they release a UMTS phone. Am I just confused here or something?

They should put a better quality camera in these phones or take it out all togeather. I have a Palm Treo 650 from Verizon, and I love the phone but hate the camera.

Why would a future road map still refer to a device made by PalmOne? PalmOne no longer exists and hasn't for quite sometime.

How old is this? Palm hasn't been called PalmOne in a while, kinda weird they would still use that name. Anyway they are probably the GSM versions of the 700P and 700W. It is nice that they got rid of the antennea though.

No, the Lennon was an old attempt at Cingular that was never released. All they doing is reviving the name, but with updated hardware.
And incase your wondering, this is the 700w and 700. Just refreshed design for cingular and later probably T-Mobile. Cingular doesn't want to be the same as Verizon, but other then the slight body differences it's actually identical to the 700.

terevos - Yes, you are confusing what UMTS and HSDPA are.
The co-exist. HSDPA is an upgrade to UMTS for higher data speeds. Your question would sort of be the equivalent of asking "why would they release a GPRS phone when Cingular went with EDGE? Well, because it'll still work, it'll just not take advantage of the speed bump.

Darnit, I wish I had scored that roadmap when I had that guy at the Cingular Store blabbing about it. If the roadmap is true, and that guy wasn't lying to me, it should also indicate that the HTC Hermes is also coming to Cingular, along with the Moto Canary, around the same time.

Why would UMTS be put into the Lennon and not the Nitro?? It sounds like "Nitro" would have HSDPA because it's "Nitro" fast. I suppose it is possible this is old information, and the phone has been upgraded to HSDPA, or that they are not mentioning the HSDPA part. Most people would choose the Lennon because of the faster data, unless the Nito is low-end and is priced significantly different.

Palm OS version would not support UMTS because the OS would nearly have to be rewritten (underway by the way) in order to do the multi-tasking and switching necessary to handle that standard.
If this is recent (only the PalmOne monikker makes me Q that) then this is probably our forecasted Hollywood and Lowrider. Looks like the idea that WM will be Palm's choice for high end and FrankyG for low end could be coming to pass afterall.

Isn't GSM the next step for cingulars treo? I have been waiting for cingulars version of this wifi phone forever. I am still on your basic nokia from way back. I am about to switch to Verizon or Sprint if this doesn't come out soon. The cingular guy told me that alabama is high speed with cingular, but that florida (where i live) isn't yet. And that I can expect to wait a month or so after they release it for them to intiate the change.

PatHorne, you're plain wrong. Windows Mobile isn't ready for UTMS either, so they just put in another processor which handles the radio -- this way the OS doesn't need to care and can just send Hayes-style modem commands to the radio coprocessor.

Finally a Treo with Wi-fi now if the only Palm software is realy updated (not like the 700p) it will be worth $250 and a two year agreement. Otherwise it is just a toy for geeks.

Some reality check here:
First, the current version of the Palm OS, Garnet, cannot support the GSM 3G standard of UMTS/HSDPA.
The UMTS standard requires that the phone be capable of handline simultaneous voice and data connections, and Garnet cannot do that, because it can't handle multitasking.
So the Palm OS version will not have 3G...sigh. In fact, in all likelihood this new Palm GSM Treo would be the rumored lower priced unit, due to its lack of 3G. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Palm slapped a lower res screen on it, like they do with their Zire models. Remember, with Palm PDAs, the smaller form factor equates to less features.
So basically Cingular customers will face this dilemma: in order to get 3G broadband connectivity on their device, they'll have to live with Windows Mobile and all of its flaws in terms of usability. In order to get to the superior usability of Palm, they'll have to sacrifice 3G and perhaps a few other features.

The "superior useability of Palm"? Are you kidding me? My company just gave us 700p to use for work, and I already have a 700w for personal use. So having the same hardware, I can really compare the pluses and minuses of each OS on a daily basis. Palm is more simple in some aspects, but I find that is because it is less capable. Palm cannot have more than one app open at a time. That's ridiculous. How can you work like that? With EV-DO rev A supporting simultaneous voice and data, on 700w you will be able to read email and look up a website at the same time you are talking to someone on the phone. (Cingular based windows phones can already do this with GPRS/EDGE/UMTS) But even when rev A comes out, Palm won't be able to take advantage of this feature.
Also, I see everyone on here beat up windows mobile for being unstable. Yet it is my 700p that has to be reset all the time. I have only had to reset my 700w once in 4 months, the 700p... 5 times just this month! (I just got it this month when it came out) So in my experience windows 5.0 is the more reliable interface.
The phone dialer on Windows is also way better than Palm's. Palm has no true today screen where you can access everything you need. (Another thing I hate about the 700p vs the 700w) So from the today screen I can just start typing anybody's name or number and the software looks for all matches. With Palm I have to first go to the contacts, which is extra keystrokes. For for all of you out there saying Palm OS has superior one hand navigation, there is one example where it's inferior. And given that calling people is probably the #1 thing most of us do with a phone, I'd say that's a pretty big one.
Don't get me wrong, I like the 700p, and and it's far better than the old Blackberry's my company used to make us use. No PDA phone out there will ever be perfect, but in day to day use I get far more frustrated with my 700p and find myself using my personal 700w phone more and more for work.

Ummm Treo w/ WiFi? Since when?
Besides, we are most likely two years away from a phone with USEFUL WiFi. So who cares? EVDO and it's GSM version will do just fine for now. (EVDO video quality is just fine for the resolution on the multimedia phones)
Sprint is going to be rolling out a new service on WiFi enabled phones so your calls will seamlessly swap from their CDMA network to WiFi networks (VoIP), and back. It will take a load off their network, and enable much more reliable coverage.

Man I love my Treo, my only qualm with it at this time is that the processor is SOOOOO slow to go from one thing to the next. Well maybe not that slow but when you are used to the hardware that I am you would feel the same way.

I have the 700w and although I like it much more than my old blackberry, the 700P has one major difference to keep in mind if you are a big text message person. The 700P keeps your text messages in a format similar to that of an IM conversation where you can see your entire conversation whereas the 700W is more like an email conversation without the ability to see what was last sent. For example on the 700W if I send a text message and get a reply I would have to go back into the sent messages folder to retrieve the original message that I sent so I know what the person is answering. Yes I know what you're thinking and yea I do text a lot and forget what I send people.
But I will agree that the ability to have multiple programs open and running is key..as well as the ability to dial via number or typing a name with the 700w is a nice advantage.

It has to be true, at least on the key point of being equipped with WiFi internally, as oppose to an SDIO option! Why is this a key point in my opionion? Because here in Toronto, on the Rogers Wireless network, we pay $100 for 100MB for data service. That is very silly! More so since WiFi sites are now popping up everywhere at much much cheaper rates. So how valuable is Class 10 Edge to me? As good as driving a V8 car at today's gas prices...NOT!

AT&T broadband Internet Services which is not affiliated or connected to Cingular Wireless what so ever, Cingular has a stringent
privacy policy set in place to protect its customers you almost have to jump through hoops proving you are well you before you can get help with your own account

I think the concern is that Cingular is about to become AT&T Wireless, and that AT&T Corp will have full control over Cingular's privacy policy. That's not to say Cingular's policy will be modified, but it is logical to draw such a conclusion.

Cingular bought AT&T wireless. AT&T is getting folded into Cingular not the other way around. And I agree Chris you have to jump through hoops just to get to your own account info.

See you are confused as everyone else about Cingular and AT&T.
Cingular bought AT&T Wireless, which was a separate entity from the rest of AT&T.
At that point SBC owned 60% of Cingular. The other 40% was owned by Bell South.
SBC bought AT&T and assumed their name. so the new AT&T owned 60% of Cingular.
The new AT&T (SBC and AT&T) is buying Bell South and will now own 100% of Cingular.
Cingular which just changed all the branding from AT&T Wireless to Cingular is now looking at the strong possibility of changing Cingular to AT&T Wireless.
No it doesn't make sense - yes it will eventually cost us all.

I have this phone by cingular took it in to my local store and they said they have never heard of it I happen to be a sprint customer so I cnt use GSM the phone seems cool as hell and I am ready to head to cingular for it it will work with simcard for cingular they said my even work for T-mobile think it is unlocked check out my pictures yeah its on myspace

OK, Cingular will not be changing it's name, as a matter of fact the date for the "switch from TDMA or die" has been set to 2008 for current AT&T customers.
Also, it would not be a rewrite of the operating system to include multi-threading, because the 5.4.9 version of PalmOS which would be on a new PalmOS device (it's on the 700p) has elements of PalmOS 6 (which will never be released, due to a business decision by the company that makes the operating system, Access), one such element is multi-threading for certain functions, such as 3G data access

Post #43 is correct. I does seem crazy for Cingular to adopt the ATT name (once the ATT/BellSouth merger takes place) but they want to use one name for all services nationwide... thats why next year it will all be called AT&T even thought they will still somewhat operate separately.

#37 - The 750w will have the same messaging capabilities as palm based devices. This link tells all as vodafone has it and then cingular will.
#43 - It will not cost anything, it will just be a name change, no policy or equipment changes involved.
#45 - They will be changing their name to AT&T.

I rather get the Cingular 8525 than treo, I love the keyboard better on the 8525....
