The Boy Genius Report: BlackBerry Stealth

Boy Genius has plenty more Cingy launch timetable info to share with us, dear readers, and one of the most interesting is a new BlackBerry device dubbed the "Stealth." The disappointment for us is that it's probably another SureType device, and all signs point to EDGE data, not UTMS. With what we could gather from the legend, the Stealth will include an MP3 player (huh?), removable memory, but sadly still no camera. The Stealth appears to be slated for release in the October / November timeframe.

Oh but it WILL have a camera...and PTT..

The "Viper" will be similar to the Stealth, except it will trade the camera for a Micro SD slot.

Both EDGE capable.

Many people cannot carry a camera phone into work (people that range from corporate professionals to stripers), so it's good that some high end phones are available without the camera!

Palm did the same with their Treo!

I know what you mean. I used to work at this custom autobody shop as a striper, and they didn't want any new pinstripe patterns getting out to the general public.

Then after work we would go watch strippers.

I agree with reader #2, even though it’s becoming sleeker, sexier and more appealing to geeks in general, the blackberry needs to stick to its brick-phone roots of being aimed at the professional. I know countless business-men, journalists and entrepreneurs who base a great deal of their business activity on their blackberry. This represents a great deal of the blackberry line's market share and its developers are wise to appease them. We all know that anti-camera policies are getting stricter (Georgia Tech anyone?) and you couldn't even get on the manufacturing floor for government-spec toilet seats with a camera, let alone something that actually mattered like in the aerospace industry. It’s good to see that this group is kept in mind along with the clamoring tech-enthusiasts who want all that media functionality by having the camera-laden and camera-less versions of the new phone.

Couldn't disagree more. I've used Blackberries since before they had phone functionality and I must say that while they were novel and offered great advantages over pagers and PDA-phone combos for a while, they are looking long in the tooth now. No one's saying that they shouldn't not be available with and without cameras, however RIM has used this excuse to hold back on all sorts of useful features under the guise of serving its enterprise market. To wit, 1.)Blackberry has no memory card support or document editors native to the device making it impossible to carry and edit MS Word, Excel, or Powerpoint documents---admittedly a useful feature for professionals 2.) RIM has chosen to remove all semblance of media capabilities which while not strictly a concern because that's usually used for entertainment but is still a knock since some firms now disseminate important messages via video e-mail or save important conference calls in a media format rather than specify call-in numbers 3) Bluetooth capability is always crippled to prevent things like the DUN profile or support for fold-out keyboards that road-warriors use. In short, RIM uses the enterprise angle as an excuse to justify their lack of substantive improvements to the hardware and software that makes their device uncompetitive, in a featues context and in a value-for-money context, in a world full of HP 6500's, Treos, Nokia S60 devices, Sony-Ericsson P and E series devices, Moto Qs, and of course the HTC devices. And of course, they are no longer the only game in town for secure e-mail.

but yeah i would like more features and hopefully they do make 2 versions, one with and one without so people can have choice. think of the strippers.
