Possible details emerge on Samsung D830
We caught a brief glimpse of the Samsung D830 not too long ago during CommunicAsia, but it looks like some pics and specs are surfacing about the slimmer-than-thou RAZR competitor. Apparently the 9.9mm thick clamshell will have tri-band GPRS / EDGE, a capacious QVGA display and cramped but functional 96 x 16 external screen, Micro SD, 80MB internal memory, Bluetooth, mini USB, and 2 megapixel camera. Mostly standard fare (ok, so we didn't see the QVGA display coming), but a price still seems out of reach. Then again, this all came from a Hungarian mobile site, so there's little here we can trust, anyway, barring those pretty convincing pics.

It's amusing that there's this race to be the most "thin". Kind of stupid. RAZR was a new item. BLADE was a copy. The more thin you get, the more rigid the material has to be. I'd be curious as to how easily you could snap one of those phones apart and if they overheat or not. That transmitter chip size hasn't changed any and I have no clue where they're going to disperse the heat.
And this is coming from someone that works in the industry.

depends on what material you use? I am sure their enginneer thought of that to prevent people breaking it easily

Samsung make great looking phones, but in general the battery life is really crummy the smaller they get (T809, for instance). I can't imagine how below-standards the standby/talktime is on this one. Sure looks purdy though.

Thin, maybe. But if you follow that link posted by erick, it's freagin' huge.
My guess is that they use the surface which presses against your face as a heatsink--you know, for added comfort.

oh snap i thought that was an antenna, only on my third look did i realize its a side profile. looks effin long tho, no mo, i mean the razr is garbage so this is like good crap. still an improvement.

In the pictures posted by Erick, the phone does look enourmous whether its opened or closed, I don't see how you could comfortably talk on it. Also, the angle created by the screen and keypad when opened seems to be too acute to be used well, I liked how the RAZR opened rather steeply and was thus comfortable. I also think it is rather ludicrious how the mobile giants fight to become the thinnest fashion phone, they all look like terrible copies of the RAZR. (with the exception of the MM - A900). Why not create smaller buisness centric phones?

I have this phone . . . well it is the Chinese version (SGH-D838). I got it in Taipei when I was on a business trip. Battery life seems OK, but I always put my phones on the charger every night.
Physically the phone is great. Thin means a great deal to me (I keep it in my front pants pocket). This phone is thin. The height of the phone is great for me, it gets the mic right in front of my mouth where it belongs.
I have had some fun getting it to work with T-Mobile I have everything going except the EDGE. I have the modem going, but the through-put is not comparable to my wife's EDGE-ebnabled MDA. I think there must be something else done to make the EDGE on this phone work with T-Mobile's EDGE.
The 240x320 screen is awesome! You should see Google Maps Mobile on "Satellite view" on this phone. It rocks!
Obligatory comparisons to the RAZR:
_ * Thinner (9.9mm vs 14.9mm), longer, about the same width.
_ * Keypad is different than the RAZR, not better or worse, but different.
_ * Menu system is much better
_ * Screen is much better
_ * Reception seems comparable (no "real" testing done, just seems about the same)
_ * Games, web and so forth are better . . . but largely because of the bigger screen.
Having a completely unlocked phone is good, I could not get my RAZR to cooperate with much of anything as far as Bluetooth was concerned (I must admit I did not try real hard) but with this phone I transferred photos to my wife's MDA in seconds.
One cool feature: Plug in the supplied cord to your PC and the microSD appears like a USB flash drive. Very nice. The cable and PC software are included (you can download the latest software from Samsung's site). I had to pay extra for the software and cable for the RAZR. Corresponding bummer: It will not charge from the PC over the data cable.
In all, I think it is an awesome phone.
