Motorola Q to launch exclusively with Verizon Wireless
Well hello Moto... Q. Verizon just went live with their Motorola Q teaser site and while they don't get heavy on the specs, produce a price or even a launch date, we now know that the Q will be a Verizon Wireless exclusive -- for a few weeks or months anyway, before Sprint ever gets their mits on this skinny EV-DO packin' WinMo 5.0 SmartPhone. And while you're checking out the VZW site, go ahead and sign up for launch notification so we can fumble about with the snooze button for a few extra ticks next week when the Q is expected to launch.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sprint and Verizon suck. GSM brands are the only ones worth mentioning.

I agree. If this would have come out as a gsm phone first, Moto would have sold a few million by now.

It was supposed to be GSM, but Verizon offered a huge purchase for exclusivity. obviously moto thought iut was worthwhile. And saying only GSM brands are worth mentioning is stupid. Verizons been pushing EVDO for a year now. Wheres all the HSDPA handests?

Their site has shots of the device where some screens show WinMo 5.0 Smartphone and some show WinMo 5.0 Pocket PC. Obviously it is SmartPhone but are the marketing peeps just idiots? The wheel is shown browsing the Pocket PC Start Menu on the screen of the Q for Pete's sake. Also - it mentions Office Mobile (Word, etc...) but I'm unaware of this on the Smartphone platform... is this new or just another mix-up between Pocket PC and Smartphone?

The reason why these hot new smartphones aren't coming out in GSM first is simple: in the US, the GSM networks, and that would be mainly Cingular, since no one expects much from T-Mobile, are lagging behind in their rollout of 3G broadband connectivity.
One of the main selling points to these new units is that you can enjoy web surfing, streaming media, downloading large email attachments, etc., on a 3G broadband wireless network.
If Cingular wasn't so slow in rolling out their 3G network, you probably would have seen this phone or one of the new Treos already available in GSM.
So I applaud Verizon and Sprint for their being ahead of the curve in their launch of 3G services. And let's not forget, that the number of CDMA subscribers in the US alone is rather large...something over 90 million. So this is not a trivial market by any means.

i had cingular for a long time and i have to say edge was pretty slow and useless compared to EV-DO. so i'm excited that phones are coming out for cdma, i just can't wait for a sprint version.
i'm still not sold on it being a smartphone over a pocket pc, but i could live with it if the user interface was ok and i have to say that slim form factor would look much nicer in my jean's pocket.
