Opera Mini 2.0 released

We just love us that Opera Mini, especially when
we're constrained to a non smartphone and/or a slow mobile connection, but the Opera peeps aren't just sitting on their
hands while we enjoy the mobile web, and have just announced version 2.0 of the browser. They seem bent on making Opera
the go-to mobile platform, and have added SMS functionality for mobile commerce so that you can buy via the browser and
have ringtones, games or other content delivered via SMS without a lot of hassle. The browser also now supports file
downloads, skinning, multiple search engines, "speed dial" bookmark shortcuts, and the vaguely defined
"visual navigation." Not quite earth shattering, but content providers might take note of the fact that just
about anybody can have access to a browser that can actual do something with the content they provide.[Via All About Symbian]

Still doesn't work with T-Mobile USA Tzones ($5.99/month) plan with the Symbian Series 40. Has to do with the default, unconfigurable Java applications settings which use only port 80 for communications. Tzones blocks port 80. It's a known issue. I was hoping it would be fixed with this release.

On my 2125, it doesn't go full screen, leaving large blank soft buttons at the bottom and the full icon bar on the top. This takes up way too much screen real estate imo.
Thats the one thing Pocket IE got right, it can go full screen, hiding both the soft buttons and the icon bar.

Anyone know how to install this on a Treo? Their instructions seem a little dated:

I am a big fan of Opera. I have been using Opera since April 2002 and in the last four years 99% of my browsing activity has been with Opera because it is the fastest browser. I live in Bangladesh and here speed of internet is a big problem.
I am eagerly waiting to see Opera Mini in my mobile phone.I wish that it is as fast as the browser.

#4. A little dated? Did you even attempt the instructions? Here, I'll cut and paste for you:
Install via mobile download
Before installation IBM JVM has to be installed. Then enable double buffering in System -> Prefs -> Other: IBM Java VM. When the Opera Mini JAD-file has been downloaded, Opera Mini is installed by clicking the IBM Java icon When the Opera Mini jad-file has been downloaded Opera Mini is installed by clicking the IBM Java icon and choosing install.
1. Point your phone's WAP browser to http://mini.opera.com/ and click on Download Opera Mini.
2. Answer 'Yes' to all installation messages and enjoy browsing the full Web, right on your mobile phone!

#6: As I said, the instructions are dated, or incomplete. There is no "Opera Mini JAD" file, only a .prc. You cannot access IBM Java VM double buffering from their instructions either, you must go to Prefs->IBM Java VM-> and then set it to use Global preferences and enable double buffering from there.
Next time, try it yourself before heaping on the self-righteousness.

OperaMini is the closest you can get to real browsing. I love it! I get full access to any website. I use a Nokia6630 w/ 5.99 tzones for UNLIMITED DATA!

How exactly does this work for you, the tzones package blocks port 80? Are you in the states or Europe?
I'm a loyal T-Mobile user, but as of late, the phones aren't so hot, they still don't have a highspeed solution for internet, and they can't even open up a friggin port!

If you load the .jad on a treo you can change the settings as described; if you load if via a .prc you have to use global settings. To install the .jad you select "install" from the ibm java app, and enter the url for the .jad file. You can find the url on the site.

Hmmmmm.
I was pretty pleased with Opera Mini 1.2, so as soon as I saw this announcement I downloaded 2.0 and started using it...
For some reason, 1.2 worked better on my Moto V551. The 2.0 version stops scrolling when it reaches an image, pausing to load perhaps?
I'm kinda wanting to go back to 1.2 now...

I installed Opera Mini on my new Motorola Ming/a1200, and I was amazed how fast it is over a Cingular GPRS connection. Why do I need a 3G phone again?
Ryan @ May 5th 2006 9:09AM
Rev. Otto (#11). You are seriously misinformed. Port 80 is NOT blocked on T-Zones at all. Port 443 (HTTPS) IS blocked though. If you are having problems, more than likely its because you are using a T-Mobile branded phone that is not unlocked. Some T-Mobile branded phones won't let you use unsigned applications (like Opera). THAT could be your problem.

I have T-mobile web on my razr. Opera mini was working and now it cant connect. I have deleted and downloaded it again and again to no avail. I can only hope that opera mini has been down for the last 3 days.
