As you can tell from Mobile Burn's
title, "Review: Sony Ericsson's Fabulous
W810i,"
they obviously thought the device had something going for it. And frankly so did we; whenever we've picked it up, we've
hardly been able to put the thing back down. According to Mobile Burn the W810i's incremental changes, like a d-pad
instead of a joystick (yes!) and 2 megapixel auto-focus camera might even make it a worthwhile upgrade for previous
Walkman phone owners. Still, the lack of
A2DP support is
sure to annoy just about anyone (really,it is getting silly for a Walkman phone with Bluetooth not to have it in 2006),
but we can certainly see why they like it so damn much.

Does anyone know when Sony will start selling this phone directly from their website?
And I know Cingular is rumored to be picking this phone up - any possible release dates?
Dylan @ Apr 24th 2006 9:21AM
I heard Cingular won't be picking it up for another 4ish months and for a nicely inflated price of 4-500 bucks. I know Rogers up here in canada should have it in May.

I have had the W810 for about a month now and absolutely love it! You can get on eBay now for around $400 with a 512mb memory stick. I know not having the the AD2P sucks, but the headphones it came with are pretty damn good. The UI is amazingly easy and stunning in quality. SE has raised the bar on this one...I can't imagine what the w950 is going to be like.

I'd buy one off of ebay but I know theres some reception issues which sony says they're going to fix in time for the carrier release (see the phonescoop review). Plus you could be getting any sort of firmware for the ones on ebay.

RE#5. There is an update application in the phone that will search for the latest firmware from SE. You do not have to be plugged in to a PC or anything. It will update over the air. I tried it and the phone told me I had the latest firmware. I'll just make a habit of doing it every month....

What does a lack of A2DP mean for this phone? Does it mean it won't be able to work with this bluetooth headset: http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=us&lc=en&ver=4000&template=pp4_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp4_1&pid=10394

A2DP is nice, but useless in the personal context. People listening to music (an isolating activity) don't want to take calls, and people making calls (a social activity) don't want to listen to music. I'll take the battery-saving, interference free wire anyday of the week.
Dylan @ Apr 24th 2006 8:44PM
Re #7 A2DP gives the ability to use bluetooth headsets for listening to music not the one eared ones seen often and used for making calls and such which is fine because they have yet to perfect the technology enough to make it worth it.

while an excellent phone, this is at best an incremental upgrade over the old 750i handset, which can be bought for less than half the price of this phone, thanks to its age. The only worthwhile feature it has over the 750 is its music app. Compare it to the w800, over which it commands a significant premium, and the updates arent truly worth the extra dough.

Given the age that everyone thinks it's hip to own a flip phone....I actually think they're rather cumbersome...some of the latest flips that have come out over the last quarter or so are blah! Sony has something very unique here sticking to candy bar designs and creating a beautiful phone in the w810i that can rival any flip phone on the market.
this phone is not only compact thin and sleek but packed with features not even the greatly overated motorola razor has....Sony Ericsson is leading in not only designs but technology when it comes to cell phones...No other phone manufactor is innovative..they all wait to see what SE comes out with and then they copy they mimmick them....
I've had other cellphones LG, Moto, Siemans,Kyrocera but over the last 3 years I've had nothing but SE phones..Since that time they've really captured what the market is wanting as far as features are concerned...overall the w810i might not look too different then the k750i on the outside but inside the k750i is obsolete and very limited...this is the reason why you can buy in on ebay for $150
As we all know that day will come for the w810i with SE announcement of their w900 and w950i
Peace
