With Palm's Treo
700p launch seemingly, just
weeks away, the
poor little Treo 650 must be feeling a bit worse for wear. Well,
Uncle Walt
still loves ya and rumor has it, Palm does too. In fact, if true, then Palm is planning a major firmware update
which should arrive immediately after the
Sprint 700p launch
in order to keep the platform "competitive." The firmware, dubbed "lowtide," is said to include
several new items, chiefly among them is the
long promised BlackBerry
Connect application for installation and configuration of BBConnect clients, built-in MobiTV support (for Cingular
Treos, apparently), FAT32 supporting 4GB SD cards, and hold onto your hats kiddies,
WiFi drivers for Palm's WiFi card... about 2
years too late. (Yeah, there are supposedly a bunch of minor changes, too.) Of course, we can't confirm if any of this
is true, but we'll be giving our Treo 650 a big hug when those wolfish 700ps are released anyway... just in case.

It's about time. Way overdue. I feel this is an excellent show of loyalty to us 650 users.

Wow! That might tide me over just long enough to make my "new every two" time limit with Verizon before I purchase the 700p! Woo hoo! Thanks Palm! (I hope...)

If this rumor is true, what is the reason for getting a 700p? Other than EVDO, it looks more and more like the 700p is simply going to be a glorified 650....

I was planning to drop the cash on a new Treo because I can not stand having to reset my Treo everytime I miss a call, but if this update helps, then long live the 650.

If this holds true then I am totally stoked because I've had the 650 for a while now and I refuse to get the wi-fi sled which makes my nice treo feel like a brick. I wish there was a way to upgrade the camera on the phone though without having to buy the new phone.

I just ditched my 650 last week because it needed to be reset everytime my phone rang. I went the HP IPAQ route which is great. But,I agree, if it helps, then more power to palm.

I'd buy a wifi card the day that came out. It would be a great move.
supersocialist @ Apr 21st 2006 8:25PM
Also, regarding phone resets: do you use mp3 ring tones? That crashed mine quite a bit. Phone Technician, so far, hasn't crashed. Ringo did all the time.

I hope everything that is reported is what is coming in that update. But it wouldn't make sense only because palm would seem to lose,i mean why buy the 700p if all ur getting is
1.a little bit more memory.
2.an upgraded but still barely noticeable difference in a 1.3 mp camera
3.EVDO (or UMT'S when it's available sometime next year.thanks cingular and t-mo)
If this is all i'm gonna get then i'm sticking with my non branded unlocked GSM 650. Why spend $400 and get locked into a 2 year contract that's probably gone run close to $100 a month
If there really is a wifi update coming, i'm canceling my data plan. I live in new york and 80% of places i go have wifi access.

If true then I'll be on the Palm platform a little longer, otherwise I'm not buying anything that isn't running SymbianOS.

What about voice recognition through the bluetooth headset?
Vision77 @ Apr 26th 2006 3:06PM
This seems too good to be true. I have not seen this on any other site except Palmaddict. And they got thier info from Engadget. Has anyone else seen this news from other sources? I will definitely remain optimistic.
nonobeez @ Apr 26th 2006 11:55PM
the 650 has to get a major firmware upgrade. With the ROM customizing tools availble, anythhing availble on the 700 software wise will work on the 650.
