Korea's Iljin Display promises phone projectors next year
Most of these projects to squeeze a projector into your phone seem to be all talk and no projection, but this new effort for Iljin Display seems to be, dare we say it, grounded in reality. So far they've only got a prototype of their coin-sized unit on display, which can throw a 7-inch color image onto a wall, but they've got deals with Samsung and LG to start including projectors in phones starting next April. Iljin apparently hasn't been just playing around with the idea, with 156 million US invested in their Single LCD Panel tech so far, and they see projectors making their way to five percent of handsets by 2010, of which they hope to have a 30 percent market share. If everything pans out we might not have to wait quite as long as we thought to start projecting our own in-flight movies, but we'll believe it when we see it.

Nice...I'll take that on a 700w with a Slingbox.

what is the practical application of all this projector in a phone business?
7 inches is SMALL and so is 22, and 30.. none of this is good to present things in a meeting,... all i see is low quality porn being played on the back of train seats in the near future...
can someone please quell my fear/frustration/ignorance with some form of use that needs to be in the hands of 30% of mobile owners (read 30% of the worlds population) within 4 years?!?

anyone??
i guess this really is just a waste of combined technology and man hours.
why not just put a rope in the phone for Office Fishing!
with SVGA screens coming to cell phones sooner than this technology, i think this is outdated before it even gets off the drawing table.

Uh... .ed, this IS for personal use, so it would be like projecting a 7-inch screen onto the back of car/airplane/etc. seats for things like porn (as you mentioned), movies, e-mail, games, etc. It's almost like having a laptop in your pocket. Granted, the technology's not quite there yet, and cellphones are extremely underpowered, but this is a step in the right direction. You mentioned that SVGA screens are coming to cellphones... that's right, but the screens are TINY. Both screen size AND resolution matter.

People who don't see any use for this are fools, fools! Envision the 800p (that's p for projector, not palm. in the future windows mobile and palm are obsolete. the phone runs linux and replicates magic ponies when you hit shift-datebook): the 800p has a 640x640 lcd powered by love, and a pair of tiny legs that swing out to prop it up for projection. You take out a bluetooth wireless controller and project Burger Time on the nearest wall while government androids inject you with loyalty serum.

When you combine the projector technology with a laser projected keyboard
http://www.laser-keyboard.com/
you will have a nice mobile workstation. Most people don't need all the resources of a computer for writing a email/txt message or sending a photo.
That brings to mind another couple situations where this would be more usable, as you get higher megapixel camera's on phones and more storage you will want a way to show them to people (probably). Also games would be nice to play on a larger screen.
FTG @ Apr 14th 2006 10:07AM
Why would anyone question the use of this? Bigger screen is always better. They just have to make it usable and not a battery killer and many people would want it.
That's the difference between the US and the rest of the world, especially Asia, in term of Mobile Tech. No one would be anything but extremely excited in Korea about this tech, while American users would diss it first and ignore it until everyone else has it. That kind of attitude is perhaps one reasons the US is often 3 or 4 genereations behind in term of mobile technology versus the rest of the world.

well, the biggest problem is that if you've ever..EVER used a projector, you'd know that you only get clarity and sharp contrast on certain specialized surfaces.. one surface that reduces usefullness is a regular wall.. so please, carry around your additional popup lap or desk screen with your underpowered treo... i'll take a subnotebook over loss of privacy and looking like a baffoon projecting my calendar onto a wall any day.
