Cingular now selling Nokia 9300
It really
only had one of two carriers to hit in the US -- so that Cingular's now selling the Nokia 9300 isn't as surprising as, well, the fact that Cingular's now
selling the Nokia 9300, you know? Sure it may have been announced in 2004, but hey, if a Series 80 tri-band
device without WiFi but with EDGE, Bluetooth, and Blackberry Connect gets your motor running, then be our guest, it's
yours to be had for $350 (or $299 after $50 rebate and contract, of course).

I'm glad I didn't buy one of these back when I was considering it. It would now be in violation of my rule: no using phones that are sold in the US. What a shame. I'm glad I'll never have to worry about my V800 being sold here.
LH @ Mar 27th 2006 11:24AM
There is a version with wlan now selling in Europe. I wonder what takes the Americans so long to get some decent models.
Artur @ Mar 27th 2006 11:43AM
All I can say to this is: Who cares at this point? Who on Cingular will really buy an old phone without 850MHz? Whoever is in charge at Nokia USA should really get in trouble for this one. It's really an embarassment to be releasing this phone this late when 9300i is already available. Plain sad...
Jordan @ Mar 27th 2006 11:44AM
mroach: I like your rule. I wish I could follow it as well, but my other rule is no phones without 850mhz, which limits me. I go to rural areas often where 850 is king.
Hard to find quad-band phones not sold in the US, but my trusty Nokia 6682 is getting me by for now!
Jordan @ Mar 27th 2006 11:45AM
Artur: This phone has 850mhz according to the site.. ?
John @ Mar 27th 2006 12:25PM
According to Cingular, the phone is 850 MHz: (850/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks)
$299 is much better than $599 for an unlocked through the secondary market.
mroach @ Mar 27th 2006 12:26PM
#3: Thanks. I'm glad you agree. Most people just call it stupid. I like haveing unique stuff that makes people go :o when they see it. Buying UMTS/GSM phones from Japan seems to do the trick. I'm sorry to hear that you need 850. My rule would indeed be hard to live by if I didn't live somewhere with an abundance of 1900. You could get a Samsung D600. They make a quadband version of it. VK Mobile also makes a bunch of quadband stuff.
tpp @ Mar 27th 2006 12:52PM
No wifi, no sale.
Where the f*** is the 9300i?
Nando @ Mar 27th 2006 1:15PM
I agree with everyone...I mean....c'mon Cingular. You're the largest provider now in the US and have access to the best technology you could ask for...but what do they do instead? They sit on red tape for so long by the time the phones are released by Cingular, something 5x better is out. Why even bother at that point?!?!
The other main ennerving thing from Cingular is their decision to render any UMTS phone you buy outside of the states useless because of their 850/1900 Mhz bands rather than the global 2100Mhz standard...once again...WHY?!?!?!

where is the best place to buy unlocked phones? ebay?
mike @ Mar 27th 2006 4:58PM
well to most people they do not know that this is an old phone, these are the people that just buy the phones that cingular sells and they never look online for unlocked phones.
But, I agree with everyone, cingular should have picked up the 9300i.
DeafLEGO @ Mar 27th 2006 5:31PM
No vibrator? SCREW IT! I will wait the Nokia e61 then.
jvijil @ Mar 27th 2006 6:09PM
9. where is the best place to buy unlocked phones? ebay?
Well the best non-ebay selection for me is mobileplanet.com(formerly known as expansys-usa.com) and they have really great prices if you ask me.
Tim @ Mar 27th 2006 6:33PM
The 8125 from Cingular is probably a much better choice then the 9300. The 8125 has a mini SD slot (MMC on 9300), has a 1.3 megapixel camera and the 8125 is lighter than the 9300.
I would have also preferred that Cingular release the updated 9300i, versus the 9300.
Mark M @ Mar 28th 2006 2:46AM
The guy I work for picked up one of these unlocked on the secondary market several months back, at my repeated suggestion. Its definitely large, but hey that's the price you pay for a real keyboard and the 640-wide screen. He is now using it as his own phone. There is a config-trick in the Browser to get it to go into full-screen mode, which I didn't tumble to for a while. Unfortunately web-page rendering can be agonizingly slow at Cingular's varying EDGE speeds. I just wish that it had a touch-screen, and UMTS of course.
RAJA @ Mar 28th 2006 12:37PM
What about nokia N91, N80 and N92?
In India they have a telivision show called Indian Idol which is comparable to American Idol here. In this show Nokia provides the losing contestants with Nokia N91. Nokia India is yet to release it officially but it is available in India in the black market.
Lori @ Mar 28th 2006 1:47PM
People have to remember that in the states there is no market for those expensive phones you all are interested in. You all are the minority when it comes to cell phones in the US. I used to work for Cingular and it's all about the "free phone" not the flashiest phone or unique phones. People shy away from those types of phones because they think it's too complicated.
Jim @ Mar 28th 2006 6:45PM
Looks like the 6682 got replaced by the 9300, not really a fare swap.
werdmodo @ Mar 29th 2006 12:00PM
Why would they hold the 9300 back for only business customers and then release for consumers this late in the game? The FCC process definitely restricts the quick release of phones into the US after then have already been launched in Europe.
sting0r @ Mar 30th 2006 10:59PM
I have had one of these for about 7 months now and it's actually a decent phone. Only reason I have it is because I need blackberry connect to get my business email. The web browser is really nice, probably the best browser I have seen on a PDA before, but it can be terribly slow rendering the pages due to the fairly underpowered processor. However, the minute I can figure out how to get blackberry connect working on a Wizard I will switch :) All in all, if you need blackberry for work and don't want to carry around two devices its the best thing going...
