Samsung has a perfume phone in the works?

Smelltones here we come. It looks like Samsung has filed a patent for storage compartment in phones that can hold perfume cartridges and release their scent at appropriate times, such as when receiving a call. That's not even the weirdest part, since the patent goes on to outline other situations that might warrant a spraying action, like when the user raises or lowers their voice: "Darling, don’t yell at me you will smell bad!" (Their example, not ours.) They also mention the possibility of a phone holding multiple cartridges and mixing their scents for one deadly spray, but hopefully we witness the end of civilization before that fateful day.

When your phone goes off a perfume is emitted. OK.

Where is your phone most of the time? In your pocket. So, when your phones goes off [in your pocket] your jeans are then saturated by perfume, and probably stained so you then turn the perfume function off, which by that point you wonder why on earth you bought a perfume emitting phone in the first place.

Think mace. While handing over your phone and valuables to a would-be mugger, just yell "Damn, Ethel!" and out mists a nice cloud of your favourite anti-mugger chemical.

It's all in the marketing.

To add perfume cartridges to a phone is absolute madness!!! Global chemical pollution from tens of thousands of chemicals including the dangerous pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, et al and including the vast array of toxic perfumed chemicals is just crazy, there are so many perfumed products now that one can hardly smell fresh air anymore, the toxic cocktail of chemicals used to manufacture these perfumes is exactly that, a toxic cocktail, please see our website for details on the dangerous health effects of all these chemicals. www.mcs-global.org

To evaluate whether fragrance products can produce acute toxic effects in mammals, we allowed groups of male Swiss-Webster mice to breathe the emissions of five commercial colognes or toilet water for 1 h. We used the ASTM-E-981 test method to evaluate sensory irritation and pulmonary irritation. We used a computerized version of this test to measure the duration of the break at the end of inspiration and the duration of the pause at the end of expiration. Decreases in expiratory flow velocity indicated airflow limitation. We subjected the mice to a functional observational battery to probe for changes in nervous system function. The emissions of these fragrance products caused various combinations of sensory irritation, pulmonary irritation, decreases in expiratory airflow velocity, as well as alterations of the functional observational battery indicative of neurotoxicity. Neurotoxicity was more severe after mice were repeatedly exposed to the fragrance products. Evaluation of one of the test atmospheres with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry revealed the presence of chemicals for which irritant and neurotoxic properties had been documented previously. In summary, some fragrance products emitted chemicals that caused a variety of acute toxicities in mice.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, out of respect for all the people in the world who have asthma, allergies, or any other respiratory illnesses, do not put scents in the cell phones. It's bad enough being exposed to those who literally bath in perfumes but being exposed to a blast of perfume I cannot even fathom. PLEASE rethink this brilliant idea!!!!!!

Global environmental responsibility is not the objective of Samsung and most companies. Just think, another device that emits not only electromagnetic radiation linked to brain and testicular tumors but now we can have a compound of chemicals to synergize with the effect of electromagnetic radiation and induce tumors with far more efficacy. I had one friend working in a fuel injection repair business who wore a cell phone on his hip for ten years of his working life. He died from testicular tumors. From the time of diagnosis to death was less than six weeks.

The winners I see in this equation are: the manufacturing, medical, and pharmaceutical industries. And this is at the cost to taxpayers, governments, and the health and safety of the public.

How will companies sustain their market? Easily, they will "evergreen" their patent with 'new' complex chemical compounds called "fragrance" so everyone will continue to think it couldn't possibly be my phone that caused my disease. And it will all be protected by "Trade Secrets" so only specialist doctors can access the data on the health and safety of such products.

If Ancient Egypt was eradicated due to lead-lined aqueducts then maybe this generation of greed and human rights abuse can be eradicated from the face of the planet.

Samsungs reputation for reliability is less than perfect so adding solvents to the mix only makes their products more vulnerable for the customers who buy their products. What happens when you wear a solvent enriched phone that develops a fault and ignites? You get a hot phone stinking of burnt plastic that doesn’t work and third degree burns. Notice how the last result is your health.

As the advertising hook on the public is "You deserve this product" then you are just as gullible as the person feeding a one armed bandit at a casino. Wake up world, you’re addicted to solvents that produce your addictive narcotic state of mind and that makes you vulnerable to further tactics of the media to seduce you into consumerism.

According to various departments of epidemiology, between 16-25% of the civilized world report being adversely affected by chemical exposure. Between 0.9-6.3% are diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

Many, many people react badly to the chemicals which make up "scents". Some, like my daughter, have severe reactions, and have been diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. Symptoms of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity include headache, confusion, fatigue, itching, swelling, loss of memory, etc. Some people suffer actual brain injury from exposure to chemicals. Also, for many people scents trigger asthma, a potentially fatal disease. Why would Samsung, or any other company contemplating putting scents in cell phones, want to endanger the health of their customers and any other unfortunate people who are in their general vicinity? Let's make the world safer for all of us, not more toxic.

I agree with every comment on here, all of which are ANTI-scented phones!!! This is pure insanity!

Being constantly offended by the scents carried everywhere by the people who wear them (whether through perfume/cologne, laundry detergent, etc.), I have realized a very basic, significant truth about the practice: Fragrance worn on people, regardless of the form, is a blatant disregard for invading other's "space". Just because the wearer wants to smell these fragrances does NOT mean the rest of the world they are in contact with wants to smell them! This will include ANY insane idea like SCENTS IN CELL PHONES!!! Fragrance and odors of ALL kinds naturally travel and permeate the surrounding air space beyond the two feet of the release of that chemical. For the most part, the smell of baking bread is something most people are not offended by, but chemical fragrances ARE. And not only can they be offensive, their chemistry is HARMFUL and TOXIC!! Making a move like this should be considered ILLEGAL! We're finally getting public places to ban smoking, and now we have to deal with THIS?! I don't think so!!

Is Samsung tied into the pharmaceutical industry?

With so many kids carrying cell phones and the documented demographics of childhood asthma this will definately exacerbate this life threatening disability.

"Twenty years ago the respiratory effects of fragrances were identified, "Effects of Odors on Asthma" in the Journal of the American Medical Association (Shim, Chang, M.D., Williams, M. Henry, Jr., "Effects of Odors on Asthma." The American Journal of Medicine, Volume 80, January 1986, pp. 18-22) which indicated that an alarming 72% of asthmatic attacks are triggered by perfume and cologne. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America it is the most chronic condition among children, it is more common in children (7-10%) than adults (3-5%), nearly 5 million asthma sufferers are under the age of 18, affecting more than 1 child in 20, along with nearly half (44%) of all asthma hospitalizations are related to children.

This marketing concept is the most asinine product offered to the public. Is an innocent child going to have to die for Samsung to realize that this was not in the publics best interest.
