Those Dutch kids over at pocketinfo.nl managed to
snag an HTC Star Trek (
i-Mate
Smartflip) and posted-up an extensive review with lots of snaps for your envious consumption. It's still not much
to look at, but the Star Trek measures in just 1.9-mm fatter than the RAZR, yet throws-down Windows Mobile 5.0, 64MB
RAM, a 1.3 (not 2) megapixel camera, a 2.2-inch, 320 x 240 Transflective LCD, and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support.
Alas, the model reviewed only featured 64MB of ROM,
not the 128MB we heard about earlier --
however, that might be rectified with an updated model release in Q4. Still, if you're hungry for storage, it offers-up
MicroSD expansion albeit, beneath the SIM card making quick access a pain. We're willing to overlook the fact that it
sports a non-standard flat, mini-USB connector since the review calls it the "fastest Windows Mobile powered
device" they have seen to date thanks to a nimble 200MHz OMAP processor. While we don't have any pricing or dates
for US availability yet, you can expect these to drop in Europe sometime next month. More pics after the break.

A bit disappointed that there's no WiFi and the microSD is underneath the SIM. Other than that, I can't wait to try this thing out!

Please bring this to North America sometime soon...

I want this phone just so I can shove it in the face of everyone who has a Razr. I really wish it took miniSD, even if it is under the battery.

I'm waiting for the trademark infringement lawsuit from Motorola.
Remember the StarTAC phone? The original thin flip?
apt @ Mar 16th 2006 11:21PM
I am still so incredibly dumbfounded that cell phone manufacturers cannot, for the most part, get one single problem that has plagued almost every flip phone for years...
WHY THE WASTE OF SPACE ON THE BOTTOM/TOP? Especially the bottom on this phone. It totally screws it up! What a waste. Of course, there's little comparison with the waste on the Moto v220. What a POS
Palmer Woodrow @ Mar 17th 2006 4:24AM
The wasted space is perplexing, unless it's necessary to get the mic and earpiece into proper position for your mouth & ear. Also, the extra surface area makes the battery bigger and thus augments its capacity.
After all these years, phone manufacturers have finally realized that the only real important dimension to the phone is thickness.
To bad we'll apparently never see any of these phones in the U.S. We're still limping along on the original Razr from two years ago. Sad.

A Star Trek phone with no Trek-like look at all???
What is so trekkie about this phone???
Hey, I am a Star Trek fan, and the name of this phone must be seriously questioned.
Or maybe we can call Captain Kirk directly using this phone? so you named it 'Star Trek' phone? sigh...
arlandi @ Jun 29th 2006 12:05AM
Erianto, i think i get where they use the name "Star Trek" came from!
look at the colors. they are the two colors used by starfleet uniforms. Dark Red and Black.
other than the colors, i dont have any idea...

This phone has such great features, but it so incredibly ugly...ugh. I love HTC and all, but WTF were they thinking? Also it'd be nice if they would stop putting memory card slots under the battery/sim.

the only bad thing that i've realised about this imate phone is that it's sound is very low. if you are travelling or if you are at a noisy place even if at a little noisy place it will be very hard for you to listen the caller. and i transferred songs mp3 format to my imate smartflip and sound for player was also very low. i have seen nokia and sony ericsson mobile they have louder sound than this set.. rest it's a great set. beautiful stylish really cool color and design. i have black one.
