Lokiwiz: unlock any HTC Wizard
Yeah, we're kind of bummed that the
only way you can get an 8125 is by getting stuck to Cingular (or,
to a lesser extent, getting an MDA stuck to T-Mobile), but those
days may be soon over. A Portuguese XDA-Developers.com user by the name of Ricardo Afonso has developed lokiwiz, an HTC
Wizard unlocker that'll free your Wizard from its SIM-locked shackles (the download's free, but you have to register to
get it). Of course, if you're trying to get your hands on an 8125 and are using T-Mobile (or, to a lesser extent, using
Cingular and are trying to get an MDA) you're still going to have to pay the full price, which last we heard could be
upward of $450 (without contract, of course). We didn't have any locked Wizards around to test lokiwiz out on, but from
the responses we've seen it apparently works like a charm, and even performs a CID unlock, which lets you flash other
manufacturer's firmware to the device -- very handy for the AKU2 rollout which is due, well, any day now.[Via Bryce Yehl]

Wait, I can not install the AKU2 unless I CID unlock the phone? Is the AKU2 update the one from Microsoft? I am getting my 8125 from Cingular tomorrow via UPS. I have been away from WinMo for so long. Thanks for posting guys!

ummmmmm you guys are seriously slow, this has been out for ages now, and has even been out as long as the 8125...way to be on top of things!
Rusty Farrell @ Mar 2nd 2006 12:57PM
Does anyone know why Cingular removed the 8125 from their site today? I wasn't sure where else to ask this question.
E71 @ Mar 2nd 2006 1:18PM
Actually, Jason O, it's been available way longer than that.
Since we're on the topic, if anyone is interested in updating their HTC to v2.08 beta which I believe includes AKU2, get your hands on this:
ftp://xda:xda@xda-developers.com/Uploads/HTC_Wizard/Roms/Qtek/RUU_Prodigy_2080701_101_11310_Qtek_WWE_Test.exe
Just follow the instructions carefully to avoid damaging your phone.

Rusty Farrell: You are right!!!!!! It is gone!!! I wonder why. I ordered mine on Tuesday, I am getting it tomorrow. I have a UPS tracking number and it is in transit now. I wonder if they just ran out and the system automatically removes it from the site as to not get back orders. Wow! I am feeling damn lucky right now. I guess I will go play the lotto while I am at it.

Works great on the 8125. You will have to use LokiWiz to unlock the device before installing the ROM referenced above. Push email is great! Another app, found at http://htcwizard.westlands.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/02/RegistryWizard_PPC.ARMV4.cab will allow you to enable 802.11g.

I walked in to Cingular the day the 8125 was announced I wanted to buy the phone. She said they didn't have it in store, only online. I asked, "when will it come in" and the lady said to come back in one month. So I go every week. I get a very nice discount on phones and accessories through my employer, so I usually pick phones up at a substantial discount. So I figured, I can pick this phone up at a really good price. Either Cingular changed their buying rules, and are not allowing you to buy a phone without contract, or these people have no idea what I was talking about. Everyone at the store said I have to wait until my contract is over to upgrade my phone, which is in december. What happened to just buying the phone and paying the normal price?

I want one of these bad :S Don't know what all this AKU2 and CID talk is, but I want to use it in Canada on Rogers. Just don't have the money yet. Looks awesome though.
E71 @ Mar 2nd 2006 5:19PM
Uh. I believe they've moved the directories around so, the correct url for the latest Qtek 9100 ROM (which will work on all HTC Wizard variants) is:
ftp://xda:xda@xda-developers.com/Wizard/Roms/Qtek/RUU_Prodigy_2080701_101_11310_Qtek_WWE_Test.exe
Rightclick @ Mar 2nd 2006 5:19PM
The 8125 is probably just sold out -- the same thing happened to the 2125 when it came out -- it took a month to come back online!
If you have other Cingular questions I find Cingular's own forums to be useful:

The 8125 is out of stock. I was just at the Cingular Premiere site and while the picture and info for the 8125 is there, the "Add to Cart" button is not and is replaced by "Out of Stock." But the 8100 (8125 w/o camera) is still in stock.

may not be wise, there is some information that people ought to know about before they install Registry Wizard. I would advice people to have a look at the HTC Wizard Blog at http://htcwizard.westlands.org and look for articles about Registry Wizard, instead of just downloading and installing. Some problems have been reported that people may want to know about beforehand. Furthermore, there is a lot of other information about tweaks for the different HTC Wizard brands to be found there.

I'm amazed at the decrease in number of entries in Engadget since this spin-off started.

I just got off of the phone with a Cingular sales/upgrade representative. She said the 8125 is out of stock and does not show as being on order (no open purchase orders). I hope this is temporary...

This unlocker works perfectly. I just did it 10 minutes ago. Flawless.

OK it's may be time to panic!
Why is the Cingular 8125 now not listed as available on the cingular website?
Not NOW! Not when I am so CLOSE!

I've been seriously considering buying an 8125 and using it with T-Mobile (the MDA looks awful and the MDA's keyboard is also quite pitiful).
"why all the hate on t-mobile?"
Just looking at the difference between the MDA and the 8125 is enough to make me hate on T-mobile. I was recently persuaded (really good deal on a phone) into switching to T-mobile, but I'm not looking forward to the experience. T-mobile makes themselves seem like the poorer man's Cingular and their service was (is?) reputed to suck, especially when traveling or venturing outside of dense metropolitan areas. The ugly magenta and gray logo and color scheme doesn't help win people over either. Whoever picked magenta as a logo color should be fired.
Unfortunately, Verizon is the king of restrictions and Cingular often charges a king's ransom, even with a corporate discount.

Can I use a CIngular branded 8125 on the T-Mobile service?
Is there anything I lose by doing so? Any bandwidth differences?
What are the differences between the two devices?
Thanks!
