Sony Ericsson's Wilma / K800 / K790 Cyber-shot phone gets official
Ahhh Wilma, you have
arrived at last. Sony Ericsson just announced their K800 and K790 (pictured) cellphones;
their first to be tagged with Cyber-shot branding letting you know there's some good digicam lovin' on the inside. True
to the name, these handsets bring a big 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and lens cover, dedicated shutter button, auto
red eye reduction, PictBridge support, image stabilization, and a brand new feature called BestPic -- press the shutter
once and get 9 full quality snaps; 4 before and 4 after the actual image you captured all presented as icons on the
display. You select the best image(s) from the bunch to keep. The handsets differ in network coverage with the K800
going dual-mode UMTS/GPRS while the K790 goes tri-band EDGE with the K790a and K790i destined for the Americas with
support for 850/1800/1900 and 900/1800/1900 MHz respectively. The K800 also features a second, front mounted camera for
video conferencing. No surprises from the specs we already saw, but if
feels good to run 'em down again: 2.0-inch QVGA 262K TFT display, 64MB internal flash memory with Memory Stick Micro M2
expansion slot, Bluetooth 2.0, an RSS reader, video recording and playback, Music Player supporting MP3/AAC, and RDS FM
radio all in a 106 x 47 x 18/20 mm (4.1 x 1.8 x 0.7/0.78 inch) "Velvet Black" package. You'll have to keep
lusting a bit longer though, 'cause these won't hit globally until Q2. Many more pix after the break.

Dylan @ Feb 28th 2006 11:41AM
I am so getting the k790a when it comes out, screw the w810i i never wanted the mp3 player end of things to begin with.
Now please don't let it cost 900 bucks or some shit like that.
Jamar @ Feb 28th 2006 12:32PM
Well... Japan is the only country that Sony Ericsson does CDMA phones in now. http://www.sonyericsson.co.jp/product/au/w41s/music.html is one example of a Sony Ericsson CDMA cellphone.

bt 2.0! 3.2MP camera! QVGA display! definitely worth the wait over the w810. hopefully they include some music playing software and support for A2DP, or whatever stereo b.t. is.
Dylan @ Feb 28th 2006 3:01PM
It does have A2DP and the software for music playing that is on it is the same as that on the w810 just not orange.
Rudy P @ Feb 28th 2006 3:40PM
I hope that doesn't mean that they won't release a UMTS version of the K800 for the states (850mhz).
matt @ Feb 28th 2006 4:01PM
is this running symbian? my guess is that it is, but i cant find it anywhere... if it's running symbian, i'll have a pre-order...
Dylan @ Feb 28th 2006 8:17PM
The K790 is the states version of the K800. And no its not running symbian, for that you will need the W, M or P series.

It's the attention to detail, the little things that make life simpler and stress free that I love about this phone, Sony have definitely done their homework. If I have headphones plugged into my k750i and then put it into my trouser (pants to you Americans) pocket, the lens cover sometimes slides open - Wilma slides the other way. The ear holes on the k750i are small and not always that easy to hear through - Wilma's is much larger. It is not so secure the phone and use the mp3 player in the gym or when running - Wilma has a clip.
I'm getting a touch of the Fred Flinstone's and wanting to shout at the top of my voice - WILMA! Wilma + wireless bluetooth earphones + large memory stick = happiness.

The K800 is one lovely peice of kit... it will no doubt replace my battered and bruised K700i however I can only wonder how much it will cost SIM-free here in the UK.

Okay, it's Q2... how much longer do we freaking have to wait here in the US??? I want my Wilma now already!
Felix Stanek @ Apr 24th 2006 1:57AM
Remember the W810 was said to be available Q1 of 06? Yes, it was available Q1 of 06, end of March to be precise. So all you waiting for the K790 rather calm down till June or so.
