Hands-on with the Sony Ericsson M600

Sony Ericsson had a press event here in New York this morning where we were lucky enough to get our hands on the M600, their new flagship GSM/UMTS smartphone which sports a 2.6-inch, QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) display, 80MB of internal memory, Bluetooth, a Memory Stick Micro card slot, and one of those QWERTY keypads where they've put two letters on each key. We only got to play with it for a few fleeting moments, so we didn't get to test out the keyboard or anything, but the M600 definitely felt very nice and solid. Click on for a bunch of pics.

That's so hot. Of course, living in America, we'll never see these on a carrier so we'll have to import them for hella $$$.

I wonder if SE will revive the CLIE branding for their PIM phones? Or use the (Pocket) VAIO? Seems logical given all the Walkman and CyberShot brandings of late.

Has anyone noticed that on the pic where the screen says "insert sound" those are all of the stock Motorola phone sounds? What the heck??

Where are the hot keys or send/end buttons?
Court @ Feb 28th 2006 12:17PM
There is no camera. Thats weird. Every phone has phone.
mroach @ Feb 28th 2006 12:26PM
#4 - That's because this is a business oriented phone. A lot of businesses and government offices don't allow employees to have camera phones for security reasons.

Looks like a calculator to me.

Is this for US release?
Robin @ Feb 28th 2006 12:36PM
It has a touch screen, which is why there are no har keys for send/end etc. It is a cut down SE P990...which I can't wait to get my mits on....

EVPohovich @ Feb 28th 2006 12:38PM
The hotkeys are probably going to be on the touch screen. I am kinda diggin this phone, still would like to have a camera and a full keypad though. But I do like it.

The design is OK if a bit staid but where SE really missed the mark, and I hate to say this because I'm a big fan of their stuff over any of the Nokia and Moto crap, is they did not make it quad-band. If a camera is arguably unimportant for a business phone, the very opposite is true of connectivity options. A business phone is nothing if not a hub that maximizes communication flexibility. Not having all four GSM/GPRS/EDGE bands is a ridiculous oversight.

looks really good. can't wait for the p990 though.

I would think that SE has a reason for not adding 850 Mhz to every phone. Most of the time they have a localized version for the US that includes 850 (an i model) because every other carrier outside the US and Canada will do just fine with the other three bands. It's probably more expensive, maybe it requires more time to develop, maybe they don't care. In the end, they will sell a lot of these even without it being quad band.

So Guys!
Did U get the deets on an 850-supporting version?

#3: SE phones have those sounds for inserting them on EMS (extended text messages) only. I currently own the w600i and owned the t106 (the simplest of the simplest), and both have them.

Looks like Memory Stick 2 (M2) Memory format. Anyone know how much on-board memory this puupy has? I heard 80MB.
Sheryll @ Mar 8th 2006 12:32AM
