Swedish semiconductor supplier
Nanoradio AB has just introduced what appears to be the smallest WiFi chipset yet manufactured. Dubbed the NRX700, the
chipset has a total size of just 20 mm square and, according to the company, also has the lowest power consumption of
any around. Nanoradio hopes the chipset will find its way into mobile phones and portable media players, and especially
devices that incorporate VoIP, although nothing firm has been announced.
Evaluation kits are
now available for anyone interested with full production set to ramp up in Q3 of this year for any companies looking to
outfit their matchbooks (or ultra-tiny phones) with WiFi.

Well this sounds promising, I can see these things inside every tech object possible;mp3 players, digi cams,dvd-r cams, car audio players,dvd-r/players,obviously notebooks,PDA's and all of the rest if its price is set right of course.

that is mega small!?!
Badonkadonk @ Feb 17th 2006 12:49PM
That isn't really that small - that's a 13x13 QFN SiP with two dies inside - what's the z-height like? a 4x5 package is small, sure, but not considerably smaller than some of the larger players in this market. Plus it's only b/g. And 90uA "standby" power consumption does not a low-power-device make. what's the active-RX and TX current consumption?
All in all interesting, but nowhere near revolutionary.
