Japan to be overrun by phone-wielding toddlers by 2007
If you think little kids on
cellphones are annoying, you're gonna want to stay as far away from Japan as possible. According to a statistical
handbook called "Japan Mobile Market," 29% of children ages five to nine owned a cellphone in 2004,
and a whopping 64% of that age group are expected to own one by 2007. The study also predicted that Japanese babies
will be issued SIM cards at birth by 2010, and that by 2017, nanobots will implant DNA-based micro-cellphones into
every fetus' brain while he/she is still in utero. We totally made that last part up, but it sounded kind of plausible,
right?

These statistics are right, many children do have these mobile phones here, however they're simply hardly used. I've only seen one or two kids with these phones, and even then they were only on strings around their necks.
For the most part, little kids couldnt give a crap and just carry it around because their ultra-paranoid parents tell them to. It's not until they become budding young tokyo-ites that it's a nescessity to email and surf 24/7.

That kid looks like he's ready to take over Sony. He's gonna regret holding that lame teddy bear phone in the photo. Parents should have gotten him a SE K750.

hahaha that picture made me laugh.

Now that's just creepy. Who do they really need to call?

It's about time! Now, my 1-year old can call me from her crib when she needs changing. Japan, thank you for providing such a useful cancer-inducing devices for my kids. You're a life saver!

Wow... just wow. I thought my dad was crazy when he bought my 13yr old brother a sidekick 2. I suppose kids are getting more and more tech savvy these days.

(Apologies if this gets duped.)
I was about to snarky myself, until I realized that I learned to read in large part due to -- get this! far out! -- TV. And a program sponsored daily by a letter & a number, no less.
It's a logical progression, IMHO, and a great opportunity for educational content providers.

Kids and cell phones...what will they think of next!
bmoctta @ Feb 14th 2006 10:15PM
Now kids will have a legitimate reason to ignore their parents. I can see it now... Little kasumatakishi will just be able to say, "Be quite, can't you see I'm on the phone!" And parents won't be able to do anything...

Pretty soon, we all will be implanted with RFIDs -- just like cattle and Uncle Sam will track all our moves!
Defy @ Feb 14th 2006 11:16PM
it seems like those are the kid-specific phones...the ones where parents program the numbers and only allow certain people to call in. I'll probably get my son one of those phones...actually, I should already, he constantly tries to steal my phone to talk on it and he's not even 2.

Well, I spent a semester in Hong Kong, and there most little tykes have mobiles as well. I think it's not a bad idea, it's not as if the kid is really being trained to use it, it's more of a security device, which I think would be nice, to always be able to call my kid on a bus or something...

Perfect for reporting Godzilla sightings.
